An unfortunate result of water-based paint and humidity seeping through still-wet artwork at the Oakland airport. . . my husband and I noticed this on our trip a while back. . .

This weekend I decided I wouldn't be eating doughnuts anymore. Too many calories --a landmine to avoid. It'd be good for me. So of course almost immediately I came face-to-face with some free ones on "customer appreciation day" for the last few days at my bank. It's been really hot but I've been inventing reasons to go in to get some free coffee drinks from the fancy drink making machine they have up. . . I'm gonna go in on Monday too just in case it's still there. . .How could I say no to the pink fluorescent tiger doughnut? How could anyone? It's pink and it's tiger striped! And a sprinkes to keep the other company?

When I first met my husband (who I didn't yet know would become my husband), my dad asked me to describe this new guy they were yet to experience in person in one word. "Silly." He didn't feel completely confident that my dad would feel secure in such a description. . .

I finally broke down and researched a place that sells GNC vitamins but isn't a retail store. So now I don't have to subject myself anymore to the piranna swarm of a sales force each time I stick a toe in for some daily multis (though it was becoming a bit of a game to see if I could stay mute the whole time I was in the store, or answer all their questions with questions. . .).

And they even have an ice cream parlor in the middle of the frickin' store!

I absolutely love this. A kid made it for a girl he loves but they're broken up now which adds another dimension of the meaning. . .

I passed this book at the library today. It's written by one of my favorite writers (My other favorites are Janet Fitch, Todd "Odd Todd" Rosenberg, and Joyce Maynard.). I haven't read this one and it's no question when I see it that it's coming home with me. I don't even give it a second thought.
Barbara Kingsolver saved my life the summer I did peacecorps-esque volunteer work. My project partner loaned me something to read ("Anything! I just need to read something in English!"). It was The Bean Trees and I was instantly and forever in love.

I also named her as a favorite author (or possibly my only favorite at the time, as I had not been introduced yet to my others) in a graduate school application for creative writing. It was through a school in London the months after finishing my undergrad which was a terrible time of feeling lost in what I didn't know yet would be my life (I didn't get in.). The Englishman who interviewed me over the phone (morning my time in Hawaii) had never heard of her (neither had most of the world). I think this somehow discredited me in his mind. Since then she's won several awards which is a nice validation of sorts somehow. . .

My in-laws have acquired quite the assortment of animals and when I went to bed I was sniffing miserably and decided to try one of these. I woke up unlike I can ever remember for a day after allergic reaction: clean and clear. Aller-tec, here have you been all my life?

Today we got to go to my superstah niece's soccer game (Her team won.). She's one of three girls picked to go up a level from where they were to fill in when some of the older girls can't make the games. I was glad my husband had strongly suggested taking a heavy coat. I always seem to forget how cold it gets in our desert climate after the sun sets. . .

Then later back at their house she and her cute little friend decorated a cake baked earlier in the day. The mom had set the temperature to 250 then partway in realized it and corrected it to 350. It was really good! I had three pieces. I might start do this myself with the temperature when I bake cakes now. . .

Today my husband juices some pineapple and then some grapes and pears together. It tastes amazing!

My amazing husband decided to try making homemade v8 juice and got it almost exactly on the nose.

My view of driving back from Sweet Tomatoes
My husband's in the wings --quite fitting to his personality, somehow.

Right after I took this picture, a trailer almost flipped doing a u-turn up ahead of us. Focused so much on getting us all into the frame, I disappointingly hadn't gotten any of this on film. . .

I took this earlier in the week of a Berkeley ceiling.

I haven't spent much time in Berkeley yet but have fallen completely head-over-heels in love with the place. . . A certain person (whose name rhymes with Roger) said I would like it there when I decided to move to California. I was slightly offended by this for whatever reason at the time --but he was absolutely right (again. damnit! :) as per usual.).

I succumbed to Costco for an eye exam and saved three hundred dollars!

I always feel like a bit of a sucker when I go to my other, more expensive eye doctor. I think they upsell everything and I get the impression that they think I don't see what they're doing but I play right along because I like my doctor as a person.

Plus calling Costco I got the doctor himself (though I'm not sure this is a positive) and scheduled an appointment for the very next day. At my other place there's always a few weeks' wait (And I always feel underdressed.). Better deal all around.

My husband wanted to get our friend a birthday present. But what do you get for someone who's blind? It 's harder than I expected. We looked for a while before finding a singing birthday card and a basket of flowers (with extra eucalyptus and added cinnamon sticks; I hope the cinnamon wasn't a mistake.).

She loved it --especially the card. . .
