Dexter Day, October 14, 2007

I went to this today.

At the very end of their journeys --the Harlans sent riders ahead to ask for fresh oxen to pull them through the last pass. The Donners didn't. . .

Did the guy also mention that the poor Donner's had bought a map that was completely and utterly made up? To go to California back was just plain scary because there were so many scoundrels selling fake maps to people wanting to go to California. They just made the guides and maps up. Did I mention that my concentration in history was California?

You're kidding.

Wow! I didn't know that was your major! I can see why. Interesting stuff.

Not kidding. Early California was a wonderful place to make a new identity for yourself, call yourself a doctor, and you were just that. You could say you were an expert of California and people would believe you because there was no one from your past there to denounce. There was a reason why we the Barbary coast was a dangerous place.

That's probably why there's such a different energy with California people than anywhere else. I think so much that the present is colored by the choices of the past. . .
