Halloween, October 31, 2007

I woke up very early (for me) today especially for the live annual webcam dressing of the rOscoe dog in his Halloween costume. I felt like such a geek! But that's what I really wanted to do this morning, so that's what I did. I've "been" every year.

Here it is in screenshots (to explain one of the signs, his dog sometimes goes by the nickname "Mister") : http://www.oddtodd.com/roscoecam/3rd.html

My husband sometimes comes home without my knowing and sneaks up behind me. . .

Tonight I'm laying down (vigorously studying) and felt him suddenly jump on the bed. I squawk in surprise. I look up and no one is there --and the bed keeps shaking.

This is the first time I know for sure that I'm feeling an earthquake (hopefully). I sit and look for a while --mirrors are shaking. I thought about grabbing my camera for a "picture of the day" but maybe that isn't so smart. Then I decide I really should just get up and stand in a door frame like my husband has said is the best thing to do in an earthquake. After it's over I feel dizzy like I've heard other people have said they do. I wonder if earthquakes cause strange gases to get released from the earth or something. . .

I don't have a picture of the earthquake nor can I think of anything to photograph that I could say was earthquake-related but have to put up something --so here. I've been happily eating lots of salads lately. I watched a taped Oprah today (and played it for my husband) about people who have terminal diseases and use it as opportunity, i.e.: to make more leafy green drinks and to savor each life moment. . .

P.S. Here they both are:

One of my favorite cups :(

Making one more ginger tea before bed last night, I saw a shot on t.v. of Venice Beach and it reminded me of some oddtodd photos from this summer and I guess I got distracted and had filled the cup more than usual so it was heavier or it was slippery or something. . .

It bounced off my sock foot and I knew this was it.

My husband's saying maybe it could be a picture of the day cheered me up a little. . .

Sunday, October 28, 2007

I played tonight with some fingerpaints I've had on a bookshelf --for years.

I'm in awe of people who take empty canvas or blank paper and a little color and create worlds that hadn't been there previously. I don't have the first clue how they do it (even though I've taken classes.). I don't have that gift.

I notice the globules washing off my hands are the same blue of the pen inks sprinkled in my tshirt reflected back at me in the bathroom mirror. My artist ex-boyfriend told me once back when we were together --forever ago, that he found out he couldn't be a stockbroker because for the short time he was, he'd always get paint on his expensive suits and ties.

I know without looking, that every single ratty tshirt I own has pen ink hiccups on it. . .

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

My computer got overtaken by some kind of virus --and had a message posted to the background to that affect: "Your computer has been taken over. . .(?!!)." So I'm at the local (freakishly quiet) city library the last few days for most Internet stuff.

Yesterday I talked a kid on the computer next to me out of throwing a mini pencil at another kid a few rows back to get his attention (both on their myspaces, presumably). Then I went back to my myspace. . .

I'm a little allergic to bananas but they're good for Charlie horses (on account of the potassium) which I've been getting when I sleep sometimes. Today at Trader Joe's they were 19 cents each. Probably a huge ripoff --but a commitment I could make. . .

This house in my neighborhood is all lit up tonight like Christmas with blinking lights. I get closer --and they're bats. Purplish pinkish blinking ones.

Dexter Day, October 21, 2001

I was disappointed in Dexter last week --so much so that I am tempted to re-name this day of the week. But I'm gonna give it one more chance. . .

Here's a dark shot of the orange scene of the opening credits. . .

(yesterday's picture)

P.S. as to Dexter : We're back, Baby!!!!!

Today is the afternoon show of the epic Elizabeth: The Golden Age. The dresses! The jewelry!

My friend and I agree it feels odd to see concessions and ticket counters roped off for lack of use in the big emptiness. . .

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Tonight I made homemade soup because I'm so cold.
chicken bouillon/(thinly sliced and added in order of longest to cook first and pauses between each) red potatoes, green beans, carrots, red onions/thyme/oregano/pepper

It's the first time I've made something that actually tastes like real soup.
I'm kinda proud.

I had green acorn squash for the first time today. My husband questioned my jumping into another unknown so soon after the Mr. Pumpkin fiasco. . .

He was right. Baked up pretty, but tasted --eh.

Dexter Day, October 14, 2007

I went to this today.

At the very end of their journeys --the Harlans sent riders ahead to ask for fresh oxen to pull them through the last pass. The Donners didn't. . .

Today I got to go on a tour of a little museum down the street.

This is the town's oldest church.

In the cemetery someone had asked that his dog be buried at his feet.

Thursday, October 11, 2007 and Post Number 123!

My husband and a friend bought this this week. :)
click on the picture to blow it up.

Here's the song (audio only):

P.S.
I volunteered in South America on a health project as a teenager. I had a hellish time but am impressed it was possible at all.I just found out the program's creator died last year.

Here's a comment about him:
As part of Guy's original team which met at River Oaks Baptist Church in 1964 and first arrived in Honduras in the summer of 1965, I well recall his gentle ways of getting the job done and the inspiration he gave to us to believe that we could do anything...and we did.I was only 15 years old. . .

GEORGE GUY BEVIL, JR., visionary, founder, and first Executive Director of Amigos de las Américas died October 10, 2006, in Little Rock, Arkansas at the age of 71. In the 1960s as youth minister at River Oaks Baptist Church in Houston, Bevil conceived the idea of an interdenominational service project in which teenagers volunteer their summer to address health care needs of rural Honduras. In 1965 the first group of volunteers vaccinated 571,000 people against polio, smallpox and other diseases. Amigos de las Américas was subsequently formed as a nonprofit organization, quickly expanding throughout the U.S. and Latin America. In 1965, Bevil received the "Order of the Lempira" Medal of Honor from the Honduras government, Honduras' highest civilian honor and the first time it was awarded to a North American. Bevil's legacy is his strong belief in the creativity, integrity and leadership of youth. His vision of youth leadership through service continues to positively touch people throughout the Americas.

10/10

I've always wanted to bake a pumpkin. My guess is this is because I saw it done in an illustrated Tasha Tudor holidays of olden days book or something when I was little. Tonight I finally did. The recipe I found googling had cinnamon and brown sugar. . . I really like acorn squash. I guess I figured it'd just be a big acorn squash.

It wasn't.

It was --eh.

I did however find out that I like raw pumpkin seeds. . .

My beloved outdoor market has an annual Halloween petting zoo.

A goose is in with all the goats.

It seems over-protective of one goat in particular (the white one).

The goat seems laid-back and sweet. I can see why the goose is so attached. It gets up. . . and the goose follows.

Happy Dexter Day.
Pic from last Summer. Very "me."

I liked our friend's ring tonight and he said I could have it. Scuh-ore.

P.S. Because I love break-up songs:

Friday October 5, 2007

Tonight I completely cleaned out all the papers cluttering up my computer room --found flyers for things from 2003.

Here's a beloved pair of flip flops I hadn't seen in so long I'd stopped wondering what happened to them. These are the special kind made in Hawaii and they're different than here --softer on the toesies. . .

Here's yesterday's blog's picture.

P.S. In Hawaii if you call rubbah slippaz "flip flops" people tease.

P.S.S. One of the previously mentioned links I found again cleaning out my favorites:

Just now I finally stripped clean my computer's "favorites" links. I'd say at least 80% had a connection with oddtodd.com from one direction or another.

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

I finally ordered a cup of white tea for the first time today (a white tea infusion, actually).

It smells amazing --like a sunny field of flowers on a breezy day. . .

I wait what seems the right amount of time and get geared up because this is gonna be fantastic (I'm already planning to go ahead and get a whole box for my "teas I love" cupboard shelf. ).

But then I taste it --and I don't really like it. But it smells so good! So I taste it again. I guess it isn't horrible. But how could I not love it? Did I just steep it too long? Now it's in the refrigerator for later. . .

I like the black mug's laughing pumpkins.

Tuesday, October 2, 2007

For breakfast I tried my hand at baked apples. I didn't have the right ingredients on hand for the filling --it called for currants and/or walnuts (as if). But I used granola from Trader Joe's and they turned out pretty nice (The house smells sweet.).

Before.

After.
